The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) club attempts to create a safe space for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) community at Otay Ranch High School. The club meets every Thursday at lunch in room 704.

“We don’t talk about it [the importance of LGBTQ], it’s like a taboo subject,” said Gretel Rodriguez, ORHS teacher and advisor of the GSA. “Students that are LGBT feel invisible on this campus… we need to talk about it in a celebration. Who they are is not bad… and they need to be told.”

The club originated by students casually talking to Rodriguez about the relationship between the LGBT and straight communities before taking action. Anyone is welcome to join the club providing they promote positivity and acceptance.

“I think anyone should join the club who feels they are not necessarily heard,” said Sofia Santos, ORHS sophomore and club president.

According to Santos, the club’s meetings mostly consist of attempting to promote positive messages about the LGBT+ community.
